Mastercard launches phone number-based money transfer service in Kazakhstan

PRESS RELEASE
Almaty
January 24, 2019

The first bank to connect to the new service was Nurbank

Mastercard has launched a technological platform in Kazakhstan for convenient, simple, and secure transfers. Kazakh banks can implement a phone number-based transfer service for their cardholders on this platform. Nurbank became the first bank to join this innovative platform and launch the service, which allows money transfers by phone number between Nurbank and other Kazakh bank cards, as well as receiving transfers from other bank cardholders by phone number. Now, knowing the mobile phone number is sufficient to send the necessary amount to your family and friends.

You can transfer money from and to MastercardMaestro and Visa cards issued by Kazakh banks. To use the service, you need to go to the www.nurbank.kz website, enter the "NURPay" section, then "Transfer from card to card of any RK bank," and enter your card number, recipient's phone number, and transfer amount. The recipient receives an SMS message with a link to the Mastercard payment system portal, where they only need to enter the code from the SMS, enter their card number when receiving the first transfer, and accept the money.

The transfer recipient can register on the secure payment system portal and change profile settings later if needed. It is possible to set up automatic transfer deposits by phone number, for instance, to a payroll card. However, setting a default card is not necessary, and one can accept a transfer or multiple transfers directly to a manually selected card.

According to Eldar Sarsenov, Chairman of Nurbank's Management Board, the next phase of this service is planned – money transfer by email address and social network profiles "VKontakte" and "Odnoklassniki."

"The new Mastercard platform is another modern, convenient, and secure service for Kazakhstan, where we've been operating for over 20 years, bringing advanced innovative payment technologies and solutions," noted Nina Willems, head of Mastercard in Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Belarus. "Cashless money transfer services using cards are widespread and in high demand in the country. The new platform will make transfers even more convenient for both senders and recipients. By expanding offerings and simplifying digital operations, we contribute to the growth and development of a cashless economy in Kazakhstan."

Funds are credited instantly to Nurbank cards, and instantly or within one to three business days to other bank cards, depending on the recipient bank. Transfers to Nurbank cards from other banks' debit cards by phone number are free. A fee will be charged for transfers from Nurbank's credit cards.

Nurbank's technology partner for the service implementation was Processing.kz, providing full technical support connecting to Mastercard's innovative platform.
