Women's Entrepreneurship in Kazakhstan: The Role and Support of Nurbank

14.04.2025

Women's entrepreneurship serves as one of the tools for self-development for the female community. By developing their own business, women step forward in line with their abilities and aspirations, engage in societal affairs, boost their confidence, and improve their financial situation. Traditionally, banking loan products aid in business development. Second-tier banks offer special financing programs for women's entrepreneurship.

"Women have a significant role in our country's economic development, with their contribution to GDP reaching 40%, and I am confident this figure will grow," states Gulnara Musataeva, Chairperson of the Board of "Nurbank" JSC.

At Nurbank, the share of women entrepreneurs in the SME loan portfolio is 46.66%, and in terms of the number of concluded loan agreements in the SME segment, it is 45.94%. Of the 11,482 individual entrepreneurs served by "Nurbank" JSC, 4,466 or about 39% are women entrepreneurs. Currently, Nurbank is expanding its lending geography and actively financing women engaged in small and medium-sized businesses. Interestingly, the bank provides many loans to develop small and medium businesses. Women entrepreneurs are always attractive clients for banks. They are more responsible and pragmatic in financial matters and strive to avoid high risks in business development.

The average age of businesswomen receiving loans from Nurbank is 46, indicating they are conscious of the business path they have chosen, and the average loan amount is approximately 33.8 million tenge.

"Women often use classic banking products and services: deposits, loans, individual entrepreneur accounts, and card accounts. Women starting their businesses take loans to open kindergartens, beauty salons, organize semi-finished product manufacturing, sewing, printing, cooking, etc. The majority of requests come from major trading cities like Almaty, Shymkent, and Astana. In these cities, women's entrepreneurship is actively developing", notes Nurbank's press service.

Nurbank and Women's Entrepreneurial Stories

Positive stories better illustrate the positive outcomes of Nurbank's cooperation with women entrepreneurs than any statistics. According to Aina Bayemirova, founder of the "NURBERGEN Health Resort", in 2022, the sanatorium opened a credit line with Nurbank. The "Damu" fund subsidized the loan interest rate. The medical facility is located 45 kilometers from Uralsk, on one of the most picturesque banks of the Ural River. The sanatorium offers comprehensive rehabilitation treatment: paraffin-ozokerite, physiotherapy procedures, and massages based on the healing properties of nature - mineral waters and medicinal mud.

"Developing the sanatorium is our family business, and I continued my father's work"

The loan was taken to expand the business by constructing and renovating a hotel. According to Aina Bayemirova, the demand for sanatorium services is growing very rapidly.

"Thanks to cooperation with Nurbank and joint efforts, today our sanatorium ranks 8th nationwide and 1st in the West Kazakhstan region based on criteria like room equipment, comfort, service, and affordable rates," says Aina Bayemirova.

Individual entrepreneur from Shymkent, Meruert Turarova, is engaged in construction equipment. The pace of construction in Shymkent is rapidly developing, and the demand for construction equipment is growing. Seven years ago, she saw the business potential in this "unfeminine" field. Today, her business is related to leasing construction equipment.

"In 2022, I applied to Nurbank for financing to purchase a telescopic loader and a telescopic excavator. I am satisfied with the cooperation with the bank. My plans are related to expanding the fleet, and I plan to apply to Nurbank for financing again," says Meruert Turarova.

Astana-based individual entrepreneur Madina Japarova says she has enjoyed cooking since childhood and dreamed of starting a business.

"So, it is not surprising that I chose cooking and delivery. I started my business in 2018 by renting a small boutique in a shopping center, where I sold confectionery. Due to the quarantine, the shopping center closed, the boutique ceased operations, and soon I had to close the business I started. That's when the idea to start producing semi-finished products came to me. Later, I added 'hot combos' and 'tea sets and hot pastries' to the main menu. Thus, the company gradually transformed into a service offering home-cooked meals and delivery," she says.

Madina Japarova shares her success story

In the summer of 2024, she took a new step in business development. Thanks to a loan from Nurbank and the "Damu" fund program, she purchased new premises and modern equipment to open a private confectionery workshop. The loan amount was 87 million tenge.

"We are constantly working on expanding our assortment, and our combo sets help homeowners set a plentiful and delicious table without extra hassle," says Madina Japarova.

Entrepreneur from Taldykorgan, Madina Nogaybekova, is developing the restaurant business in the city.

"MARMAR Restaurant is an excellent venue for holding corporate events, weddings, and celebrations. Visitors appreciate it for its exquisite interior, diverse menu, spacious hall accommodating 400 seats, and high-quality sound and video equipment. Thanks to the loan from Nurbank, I realized my dream and purchased the restaurant," says Madina Nogaybekova.

As you can see, supporting women's entrepreneurship is one of the priorities of Nurbank's work. The bank strives to meet customer needs and makes credit products flexible and convenient for women entrepreneurs. The bank launched the "Business Ladies" program aimed at financing women's businesses. The loan is provided for replenishing working capital and for investment purposes; the loan amount can reach up to 100 million tenge.

"We are confident that access to financial resources will enable women entrepreneurs to boldly expand their projects, strengthen their businesses, and create new jobs across the country", says Gulnara Musataeva.

Financing women's businesses can be called one of the main development directions of second-tier banks, and Nurbank occupies a special place in this regard.
